Chapter 24 — The Second Watershed
AI compresses the build and compounds the product
Artificial Intelligence changes both sides of the hardware equation: it speeds up development before launch and expands what products can do after launch, narrowing the old divide between the shipped product and everything that follows.
Since large language models (LLMs) entered the mainstream, research cycles have compressed, production work has accelerated, and development itself has begun to change shape. In some cases, it has become agentic enough to earn the loose, slightly ridiculous, but revealing label: "vibe programming."
This chapter is about AI tightening the loop between idea and artifact across the organizations that build and sustain tangible products. Creators, developers, marketers, firmware engineers, test teams, and support organizations are all feeling the same compression. A firmware engineer can scaffold a driver faster. A test team can generate coverage faster. A support team can answer a customer at 2 AM with less human intervention.
