Chapter 25 — The Tangibles Product Manager
What the Job Actually Looks Like When Atoms Meet Bits
The tangibles product manager is not a software PM who learned some hardware, or a hardware engineer who learned some software. It is a distinct role – wider in scope, split across incompatible time scales, and accountable for decisions that cannot be undone with a deploy.
It is Monday morning, 09:00. First on the calendar is a gate review for the DVT (Design Validation Test) build. The mechanical team needs a go/no-go decision on injection mold tooling: $180,000, fourteen weeks to cut, and impossible to treat casually.
On Tuesday at 11:00, the companion-app team has sprint planning. Their backlog holds thirty items; their release cadence is two weeks. On Wednesday, there is a call with a regulatory consultant about ETSI EN 303 645 conformance for the EU launch.
